Airborn Fuels Switzerland
Enabling e-SAF production in Switzerland
We bring technologies from research and industry into bankable consortia, accelerate their path to market and take a stake in what we help build.
Why Airborn Fuels Switzerland
Switzerland has world-class Power-to-X research, abundant summer electricity and, since the revised CO₂ Act, a legal framework for synthetic aviation fuel. What it lacks is the bridge from the laboratory to industrial production. Airborn Fuels Switzerland builds that bridge.
Our founders created SPIN, the Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network, and helped shape the political foundations for e-fuels in Switzerland. Today we work on making the implementing ordinances practicable – and on the projects that will use them.
What we do
For research groups and technology companies
You have a technology that is ready to leave the lab. We bring it into a consortium with industrial partners, a site and a financing path – and we share the risk.
For industry and investors
You want to enter the e-SAF value chain without building a project from scratch. We open access to developed projects, sites, partners and the regulatory context.
For policy makers and funding bodies
You want to see domestic e-SAF production become real. We show what it takes – and we are doing it.
Where we stand
From supportive legislation to the first project – and on to industrial production.
- Supportive legislation: achieved – legislation that makes e-fuels eligible, provides sufficient funding and creates a market through blending mandates (Art. 11a of the CO₂ Act)
- Innovation network: achieved – SPIN, founded 2021
- First project: feasibility study for a Power-to-eMethanol-to-SAF demonstration plant and innovation platform at Sisslerfeld completed in January 2026; formation of a research and industry consortium under way
- Next: financing, permitting and construction – commercial operation planned for 2034
- Long term: 100 % sustainable aviation fuel by 2050
Partners and networks
Sisslerfeld feasibility study supported by the Canton of Aargau, Cat Aviation, Groupe E, naturenergie, Pilatus Aircraft and a scientific advisory group including Empa, ETH Zurich, FHNW, OST, PSI, FOCA and armasuisse. Member of the refuel.ch research consortium and the Coalition for Green Energy & Storage. Co-founders of SPIN.
